What We're Looking For
The Practice Consultant – Planning serves as a strategic advisor and subject matter expert, blending deep technical planning knowledge with leadership support to drive project success and client satisfaction. You will partner with office, regional, and divisional leaders to shape planning practice standards, lead high-level pursuits, and cultivate thought leadership across markets. In this role, you’ll also leverage planning group insights—such as budget stewardship, resource coordination, and staff mentoring—to ensure seamless delivery of complex projects and foster the growth of both your discipline and the broader firm.
You will be a leader in the growing planning practice at HNTB and specifically provide guidance and mentorship within the Northeast Division and Connecticut Office. Opportunities include leading and advising on environmental planning, permitting and NEPA work on projects in Connecticut and throughout HNTB’s Northeast Division (New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire).
What You’ll Do:
Applies technical expertise and guidance in area of practice. Acts as subject matter expert to provide strategic advice and analysis and engage in marketing and business development efforts for pursuits.
Prepares technical materials for projects, including strategic analyses, commercial documentation, technical provisions, procurement documents, and other materials pertaining to applicable subject matter focus.
Works with the line organization in a senior support role on strategically important client and project pursuits, providing technical input and market knowledge to navigate complex projects and enhance win probabilities and client satisfaction.
Targets national and international associations, trade shows, etc., to help the division/region/office identify leads, win work and maintain industry recognition.
Identifies, pursues, and executes high-level projects with assigned departments, agencies, and programs.
Assists in the successful contracting and project execution process, working closely with regional HNTB staff and office leadership.
Partners with National Practice Consultants and Leaders to develop and promote technical knowledge and applicability of practice area.
Works with HNTB project leadership to manage client relationships and guides the application of HNTB services within a specific practice area to best serve the interests of the client and HNTB.
Contributes to strategic planning in area of expertise and assists with thought leadership initiatives.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with 12 years of relevant experience
Master’s degree in relevant field with 11 years of relevant experience
In lieu of degree, 16 years of relevant experience
Extensive experience applying specialized planning expertise to guide multidisciplinary project teams in scope definition, scheduling, budgeting and quality control.
Proven ability to provide technical input on high-impact pursuits, including development of procurement documents, technical specifications, and commercial analyses.
Demonstrated success in leading or supporting marketing and business development initiatives, with a focus on identifying opportunities through industry associations, trade shows, and key client relationships.
Strong collaboration skills with office and division leadership to implement strategic sales and SSA planning processes, shaping pursuit strategies and market positioning.
Familiarity with contracting processes, including scope development, fee evaluation, and execution of SCA procedures to ensure alignment with firm delivery standards.
Experience partnering with national leadership to codify best practices, contribute thought leadership, and advance the planning discipline’s internal knowledge base.
Ability to coordinate with group and department managers to monitor operating budgets and ensure alignment with office financial goals and forecasts.
Skilled in advising on staffing priorities and resource allocation across departments to optimize utilization and meet client needs efficiently.
Track record of mentoring and coaching planning staff at all levels, supporting professional development, performance management, and succession planning.
Active participation in office leadership forums, contributing planning insights to strategic initiatives and execution of office-wide goals.
Strong client relationship management capabilities, including providing consistent technical counsel and facilitating seamless transitions from business development to project execution.
Experience overseeing key project delivery processes such as work planning and monthly reviews to maintain high quality standards.
Proven leadership in cross-discipline coordination, fostering collaboration and identifying work-sharing opportunities across planning, engineering, and other teams.
Ability to develop and deliver compelling presentations, white papers, and training sessions to enhance internal and external planning capabilities.
Hands-on experience executing high-level planning engagements, including research, report writing, design development, and specification preparation.
Engagement in recruitment and retention strategies, including advising on talent needs, interviewing candidates, and supporting career path development.
Flexibility to perform additional duties that support the growth, visibility, and recognition of the planning practice.

The approximate pay range for Rocky Hill, CT is $193,811.25 - $309,594.62. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
