Job Description

The Speech Therapist independently interprets test findings, diagnoses the specific errors,

makes appropriate recommendations, and designs an individualized remedial program.

The Speech Therapist directs and conducts the remedial program for individual children

and assesses each students progress regarding audition, language, speech, and records

appropriately according to departmental guidelines. The Speech Therapist makes

decisions consistent with the schools philosophy, policies and regulations. The Speech

Therapist collaborates and communicates effectively with parents, teachers, audiologists,

supervisor, and other faculty members. The Speech Therapist must be able to determine

when referral to other professionals is necessary and make appropriate recommendations.

This position follows the academic calendar and reports to the Program Director.

Results Expected:

Children will demonstrate improvement in their listening, language and speech

development through appropriate therapeutic intervention. The Speech Therapist is

directly responsible for the childs progress in the development of listening, language,

speech intelligibility. Children will demonstrate benefit in all areas of development

through lessons and activities designed to promote a holistic approach to education. Each

child will make appropriate progress based on the individual needs and outcomes set

forth for the child.

Position Duties:

Evaluates, analyzes and determines each childs current level of auditory, speech, pragmatics and oral motor performance. Develops, plans, and implements appropriate therapeutic program for each child on his/her caseload. Uses appropriate strategies and individualizes lessons to meet needs of each child. Develops annual goals for each student which are designed to enable the children reach their full communicative potential. Integrates audition and auditory training into all therapy activities. Evaluates and documents student progress on a regular basis, ensuring that adequate progress in the areas of listening, language and speech is made.

Demonstrates competency in the evaluation and treatment in the areas of auditory, speech and language performance for each child on the caseload and will pursue continued knowledge as necessary for individual children. Demonstrates awareness and knowledge of physical, cognitive and linguistic variances with deaf children who have accompanying learning challenges.

Collaborates with supervisor and teaching staff to ensure continuity and integration of curriculum at each instructional level.

Maintains daily logs, attendance records, student files and writes all reports and insurance documentation as required in a timely manner. Prepares IEPs, reports and evaluations per standards set in department, meets with parents to discuss IEP goals, objectives and to report progress. Ensures confidentiality of student information following guidelines set forth by SJI HIPAA standards.

Completes daily hearing aid and cochlear implant checks with students. Is knowledgeable and attempts to trouble shoot equipment with their children. Evaluates the auditory status of each child.

Uses therapy time effectively by: being prepared for each session, following schedule, identifying and providing clear expectations, using appropriate treatment materials and strategies, modeling appropriately, providing specific, positive correction of student errors, adapting strategies and techniques for each child as needed.

Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning, provides differentiated experiences to meet variable needs and abilities of students, and engenders motivation and enthusiasm in therapy session. Uses appropriate behavioral management strategies for each child as set forth by SJI policies and procedures.

Maintains open communication with parents via observations, phone calls or letters. Educates parents about speech, auditory, linguistic and oral motor development as it relates to their child. Empowers parents to promote listening, speech, language and communication development within the home

Provides mentorship and guidance to practicum students, student teachers and/or volunteers. Completes appropriate documentation and evaluation on those placed in classroom per guidelines set by program responsible for placing students.

Maintains professional standards (including ASHA certification, residing state SLP license, teaching certification, Medicare provider status) through attendance in workshops, participation in appropriate professional development opportunities and reading professional literature. Will meet the annual CEU requirements as established by the residing State Board and ASHA. Is an active participant in presentations, workshops, and seminars promoting professional development of others. Keeps abreast of current research and best practice in therapeutic approaches to childrens listening, language and speech development. Collaborates with department to ensure that current best practices are being used.

Upholds the professional, moral and ethical standards of the school. Actively supports the mission and values of the school. Maintains professional demeanor. Works cooperatively with all staff. Collaborates in a positive way with supervisor departmental staff, and speech therapists to ensure continuity and integration of curriculum at each instructional level. Coordinates with classroom teachers regarding class themes, academic vocabulary and updates on progress.

Actively participates in faculty, department and committee meetings, as well as other meetings as requested. Provides input during committee meetings such as ISACS which promote the self study process. Actively participates in meetings designed to ensure each childs needs are appropriately addressed within the context of the therapy session.

Actively participates in supervision as requested (i.e., recess/lunch duty), liturgies, committee assignments, Open House, Academic Awards and other special activities. Uses appropriate behavioral techniques as indicated in the employee and faculty handbooks. Utilizes appropriate motivational strategies in order to fully engage children in therapy. Demonstrates a positive demeanor and attitude with students, parents and staff. Helps maintain staff morale. Maintains classroom, department supplies and equipment in proper order.
